Windows 10 v1607 VDI vm3dmp.sys BSOD

Yesterday I was suddenly disconnected from my Windows 10 v1607 VDI and when reconnecting was just seeing a black screen.

After about 1-2 minutes or so I was able to reconnect & noticed it had rebooted prompting me to check Event Log for gems:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x000000d1 (0xffffe0fe07a00000, 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff80ee2d55760). A dump was saved in: C:\windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: bf05cd81-5e7d-4190-93af-dab35bee3049.

The MEMORY.DMP suggests vm3dmp.sys was the faulting module (process: VMBlastW.exe).

Thought's on how best troubleshoot this further?

Environment:

  • ESXi 6.5.0, 4564106
  • Horizon View 7.2.0 build-5735293
  • VM: Windows 10 v1607 without GPU attached (2 vCPUs, 12GB)
  • Using Blast
  • USB auto connect enabled
  • Dual monitor setup with display scaling enabled
  • No writable volumes; No AppVolumes

The full details of the analysis are in the file attached to avoid 4 screens of text; happy to paste text if requested.

View Desktops Plugin for vSphere?

Hi All,

Back in View 5.2 there was a Tech Preview for the View Desktop plugin for vSphere; so you could see VMWare View information while logged in to the vSphere Web Client.

What ever happened to this & is there something similar available for newer versions of View? (we're currently on 6.2.1)

Was really really handy to have View information in vSphere (e.g. search for a user name & see manage any VM's assigned to that user in a single console) rather than having to jump between multiple screens.

Cheers

Jason

Upgraded from 7.0.1 to 7.3.1, getting "You cannot access your applications or desktops"... error

Hello:

We just did an in place upgrade from Horizon 7.0.1 to 7.3.1.  The upgrade steps went fine but now the HTML client is no longer working when connecting to any of our desktops.  We can authenticate, but just after authentication we are getting the error "You cannot access your applications or desktops from the web client.".  No desktop pools are presented like they used to.   I have verified HTML access is still enabled for the pools, as it was enabled before and was working before the upgrade.

Is this an issue with 7.3.1 or is anybody else having this issue?  Thanks.....

Horizon 6 client hanging when trying to connect to a connection server

Hi

We have had Horizon 6 for around a year but recently we have been advised of an issue with the horizon client hanging after logging in. (This is an intermittent issue)

We use a single sign on solution which authenticates with AD called imprivata which automates access to vmware view.

For reference, here is the part where it hangs:

vdi hanging.jpg

We have windows servers acting as connection brookers, which is load balanced by a DNS round robin.

VMware support have recommended reinstalling the client, enabled PCoIP in the horizon console but this hasent resolved our issue.

The issue still remains intermittent but its impacting on the service and the department are close to pulling to entire solution due to this issue.

Help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

How to get the published application/Desktop list from VMWare-view server when connected from VMWare Horizon View Client on Linux platform ?

Through provided GUI, we can see the list and use it.

Is it possible to get the list from command line only ?

GPU offload with Blast Extreme

Hi guys,

I'm looking to get some clarification on the status of CPU/GPU offload on the client when using Blast Extreme.  I have a setup I am testing at the moment using an Nvidia P6 GPU with a P6-4Q profile assigned to a Horizon 7.2 based Windows 10 virtual machine, running the latest driver set (385.41 for Windows, 384.73 on the ESXi 6.5 host).  We are using a variety of options to connect including laptops and tablets with the latest Horizon client installed (4.6.1), Dell Wyse thin clients, and some 10Zig zero clients.  All connections use the Blast protocol.  I am aware that the encode of the H.264 remoting stream is taken off the CPU of the host and is instead done by the GPU (The P6 in this case) with the advantage of density increasing, performance, etc.  However I am interested to know if there is any client-side decoding done, particularly on those laptops running high-end Nvidia GPU?

I have some experience with TGX, which uses the power of certain GPU to perform encode/decode functionality at both client and sender end, and wonder, as TGX and Blast are both H.264 based, whether the same decoding occurs on a suitable client when using Blast?

Thanks

unified access gateway backend application server vrs horizon destination server

I created two unified access gateways using v3.1. Under GENERAL SETTINGS , EDGE SERVICE SETTINGS, HORIZON SETTINGS.

The first one shows PCOIP, TUNNEL, BLAST, UDP TUNNEL SERVER, and BACKEND APPLICATION SERVER.

The second shows PCOIP, TUNNEL, BLAST, UDP TUNNEL SERVER, and HORIZON DESTINATION SERVER

Why does one shoe backend application server and one shows horizon destination server?

VMware Horizon 7 compatibility with PCOiP.

I am new to Horizon. I worked in a small VDI environment with Horizon 6.24 and all Zero clients.  We are contemplating on upgrading to Horizon 7 which comes with BLAST EXTREME. My question is will I have the option to use PCOiP instead of BLAST EXTREME?  Please note that we don't have plans to upgrade our existing clients (Zero clients).

Testing Instant Clones

We just updated our dev environment from 6.2.4, to 7.3.1, and were interested in trying ICs. I took my typical linked clone parent, cloned it, and removed/re-installed the View agent, this time picking the Instant Clone option. I shut it down, snapped it, created a new IC pool, all went well it seemed, until deployment where we keep getting this:

snip_20171012152445.png

I've checked the service account rights in AD as well as vCenter. I THINK I covered all the bases, but, seems I might be missing something. Has anyone come across this?

We're using vSan. vCenter/ESXi environment is 6.0 Update 3.

Vcenter certificate errors on Horizon View 7.2

Hi,

We are getting un-trusted certificate errors about our vCenter box on our View Administrator.

We have recently migrated our Certificate Authority onto a newer OS but the certificate itself is valid and is not producing any errors when browsing to the Horizon Webpage.

Anyone had a similar issue, or have any ideas on what could be causing the issue.

Cheers,

Matt

Windows 7 VDI idle CPU usage

$

Just curious if anyone knows of a tool that I can use to discover what processes are consuming CPU cycles on our VDI win7 vms. Currently, idle VMs sitting at the alt-ctrl-delete screen are consuming anywhere from 179-389 mhz as reported from vsphere. We have a lot of idle machines, depending on the time of day, so they are consuming a lot of the cluster resources. If I had to guess, it would be mcafee running inside the guest, but I would like to know other culprits. I am aware of the host based virus scanning (i.e., McAFEE Move) but hoping to find some other tweaks with the ultimate goal of increasing VM density and improved performance.

Horizon 7.2 - VM with NVMe Controller - Resets HDD Boot order

We want to utilize the new NVME virtual controller in our VMs' configuration as it boosts performance considerably. It works fine on the master image, however when we go and recompose the Linked Clone pool in Horizon View, it resets the boot order by adding a 20mb temp disk and it won't boot after that. Is there a way to avoid that nuisance? We tried adding bios.hddOrder = "nvme0:0" to the master image, but it disappears in the replica on the recompose.

Thank you.

Sysprep and Guest customization in Automated Pool (Windows 10 1607)

Hi,

I created a Windows 10 1607 Pool and guest machines are failing because the vdi are stuck and waiting for manual user intervention. The pool is setup to use guest customization so sysprep is the issue.

The vdi is stuck at the ‘Hi there pick a language’ screen.  After, we manually answer the questions, the vdi works as normal. Any way of bypassing that screen automatically? Or has anyone else experience the same symptoms.

Thanks,

P

Access point hostname

Hello!

Can somebody help me with the following question.

It's recommended to deploy Access Point appliance with PowerShell script. So appliance has been deployed as a reverse proxy for IDM. However OS name after deployment is 'localhost'.

I don't see any option in configuratiion file where I can set OS name. I can set only VM name in vcenter inventory.

So technially name can be changed in operating system through VM console or SSH.

However is it supported to do this change?

Thanks.

Horizon 7.3.1 Instant Clone Pool not using parent VM network port network is blocked

$

We upgraded to Horizon View 7.3.1 and we have a few instant clone pools that have the network port group not the same as the parent VM.  Previously in 7.2 and 7.1 this was fine, but since going to 7.3.1 the network card on the VMs would be blocked by the port group security unless we switch the security on the port groups to:
MAC address changes: accept

Forged Transmits: accept

Obviously this isn't ideal, so does anyone have any ideas why this would have happened or any suggestions on a workaround other than changing the security settings on the port groups?

iSCSI (1 Gbps) on VDI

Hi All,

We are designing VDI Pool for 50 users. After assessments we found that approx 3500 IOPS are required at the backend.

We have existing storage VNX5200 which has sufficient space.

Storage engineer suggest this IOPS can be easily achieved, He is concern about the iSCSI throughput. iSCSI based on 1 Gbps throughput

But 1 Gbps link is not at all utilized, hardly 10%.

Requesting your suggestion/comments on the above approach.

Windows 10 unsupported OS instant clones

I figure this has been discussed but I couldnt find anything using search. I have Horizon 7.2 attempting to create an instant clone pool. using windows 10 enterprise build 1607. Checked this version is supposed to be supported. when I attempt to use it as the parent for instant clones I get the message that it is an unsupported OS.

Any ideas?

Hi all,

I am running on VMware Horizon version 7.3.1

When I want to collect the Agent logs on the Desktop directly with the Support.bat file, the collecting is stucking at

Gathering SVI information...

When trying to collect the logs with the vdmadmin tool on the Connection Server, I get this error:

Please wait, this may take several minutes...

Failed to obtain agent DCT (Cannot obtain channel for remote access)

What can be the Problem here? I need the logs because I have a Screen Problem when using a Zero Client Wyse P25 with two Monitors.
