Do I have my VDI Deployment Storage Build correct? Am I close?

After spending some, well a considerable amount, time on this and other forums as well as researching on the web and manuals I have a plan as would like some feed back.  We are currently running vCenter and ESXi 5.X with View 4.6.1.  So far so good the occasional issue but for the most part very very stable.  We are currently running about 70 VDI Desktops 10 dedicated and the rest linked clones we are getting ready to probably double and that is the issue. Up to now we do not separate out the replica form the linked clones on storage and we do not redirect user files and all users have roaming profiles and full folder redirection.  I was working a case with VMware tech support and it was mentioned after I asked that once we hit a 100 VID VMs re-organizing storage might be a good idea.  In the end we wil end up with about 300 linked clones and 4 seperate pools.  Here is the plan

  The master vm for linked clones is 20GB and after the snap shot it is still 20GB.  Once I start the process of building the pool the replica is 20GB and the individual linked clone is 2.25GB.  So I based on my reading I would put the replica on out fastest storage and the linked clones on our second fastest storage.  Correct?

  Based on the above being true I would have three volumes one for the master vm, one for the replica, and another for the linked clone.  replica on fasted storage, linked clone on next fastest, and the master on slowest.

  Does this sound correct?

TIA,

Jim

View thick client working - but HTML isn't - using security server

Though I best start a new thread after the marathon of getting the thick client talking through the DMZ security server.... all working well now.

I am now testing the HTML experience through the same security server... and getting very much like I was getting with the thick client.  I go through all the authentication, it says connecting to desktop and that's it.  Eventually says the server took too long to respond.

I now have a complete list of the firewall rules anyway.

Clearly port 8443 is open from Internet to DMZ security server.

I have checked the rules and scanned and apparently they have left all ports open between the DMZ and our internal network both directions...   I have checked and 22443 is open to  the desktop...

Can anyone point me to what I should look for next please?

Thanks

VDI study project

Hello,

I have a problem that looks like this: I try to create a VDI infrastructure project for studying purposes with the following requirements:

- 1 server which hosts the virtual machines and some shared drives used to store user's documents/projects (this should have some kind of backup for data recovery) - OS: Windows Server 2008;

- 30-40 zero clients (50 max.) that connect to server by optical fiber cables (the users connect to their virtual desktops supplying their credentials - user/pass - and using a security token - USB stick);

- the users will generate a medium workload (MS Office, Adobe Reader, watch movies, etc.);

- users have persistent desktops (everyone keeps their personalized workspace: shortcuts, installed programs, etc.), have their own virtual HD and can also access some shared folders/partitions on the network - OS: Windows 7;

- users use different apps, can use network printers and access USB ports (there should be a supervising software that locks/unlocks USB ports and detects *authorized/unauthorized devices*).

It would be really helpful if you could highlight the following things:

- what are the recommended zero/clients (one display, can accept security tokens, cost effective) and sellers;

- what are server's specifications that this system needs (maybe SSD for running VMs and HDD for user storage, RAM, CPU etc.) and sellers;

- software recommended for creating virtual desktops and manage them (hypervisors, connection brokers);

- total cost estimates: server hardware + zero clients + virtualizing apps licenses + OSs licenses;

- other useful tips.

I read some things about virtualizing solutions and hardware provided by Citrix, Clearcube, Fujitsu, HP, Panologic, Dell Wyse, Sunde, Teradici, VMware but I still lack the knowledge to integrate all these in a unitary project.

Thank you in advance.

Upgrade experience with 5.2 and Composer 3.0

I am planning an upgrade from View 5.1.3 to Horizon View 5.2 for two View installations on vSphere 5.1 (vCenter 5.1, ESXi 5.1).

Looking at the Horizon View 5.2 upgrade compatibility matrix (http://pubs.vmware.com/view-52/topic/com.vmware.view.upgrade.doc/GUID-E9BB81A4-1054-4BBB-A43B-CB60A6EF909E.html) and it says that View Composer 3.0 is not supported with Connection Server 5.2.

Also, on http://pubs.vmware.com/view-52/topic/com.vmware.view.upgrade.doc/GUID-504805D9-6645-438B-B3C5-F56EF6E38E77.html, it says " During an upgrade, Horizon View does not support View Composer provisioning and maintenance operations, local mode operations, or View Transfer Server publish operations. Operations such as provisioning and recomposing linked-clone desktops, checking out or checking in desktops, and publishing View Composer base images are not supported during the transitional period when any Horizon View servers are still running the earlier version. You can successfully perform these operations only when all instances of View Connection Server, View Composer, and View Transfer Server have been upgraded"

On http://pubs.vmware.com/view-52/topic/com.vmware.view.upgrade.doc/GUID-AF61903D-E162-4B30-8102-FEC4D14809C3.html , it says "During the first maintenance window, you will upgrade View Composer. Operations such as provisioning and recomposing linked-clone desktops and publishing View Composer base images are not supported until all Horizon View servers are upgraded" and then " At your next maintenance window, continue with the Horizon View upgrade"

I need to know exactly what it means about running Connection Server 5.2 with Composer 3.0 temporarily between maintenance windows. I understand it's not a "supported" combination, but will it still work?

Here is my issue - I have two separate View environments: Prod and DR. Entirely separate sets of connection, security servers, vCenter, and composer servers. However, they share the same Composer servers for each vCenter. One composer server for Prod vcenter, and another composer server for DR vcenter. The composer & vcenter servers are configured in both environments. This has been working fine, but can be confusing during upgrades.

My plan is to upgrade the DR View environment, which includes the DR composer server which works with the DR vcenter. However, the Prod environment will still be Connection server 5.1.3 and will need to use the newly-upgraded Composer 5.2 at DR because both View environments provision and maintain desktops in both environments.

The DR View upgrade will take place all at once, i.e., Composer, Connection Server, and Security Servers will be upgraded on the same day.

However, the Prod View upgrade will take place almost a week later. We will switch users from connecting to desktops managed by Prod to ones managed by DR about halfway through the week (load balancing via Microsoft NLB and switching incoming connections to use DR connection servers)

So what I need to know is: will Prod on 5.1.3 fail to do any composer operations in DR vcenter when DR Composer is 5.2?

Conversely, will DR 5.2 fail to do any composer operations in Prod vcenter when Prod Composer is 3.0 (not upgraded yet)?

If composer operations really will not happen at all (fail with errors in its log or something) then I need to spin up some more servers and install composer on them.

Redirect authentication to connection server based on entitlements

So here is what I need to do.

Ideally three pools, one connection server, and one security server.

One for faculty that allows internal and external (security server) connections.

Second is for students that are allow internal and external access. (parent approved)

Third is for students that are only allowed internal access to school systems.

Unfortunately the current connection server design does not support a single connection server to do this.  I cannot for example allow one pool to access the security server, and prohibit another pool from doing so.

So install a replica connection server, do not connect to a security server and add a tag like "Internal".

Add internal only pool to the replica with the tag "Internal" only.

There are a few issues with this.

1.) This represents another DNS name for folks on campus. I can no longer just just "view.domain.com". I now need "view.domain.com" for folks that are allowed internal and external connections, and something like "view.internal.domain.com" for the internal pools only.

This is one more step for my users, and also for my zero client and kiosk configurations.

2.) The student pools are non-persistent floating pools. So now I have to split up the desktops that are available in each pool.  So out of 100 vms. Say I put 70 in the internal only pool, and 30 in the external pool.  Well now an external person might get no vms available because 30 are already in use. Also and internal person might get the same error.

It seems to me like there are some design changes needed.

1.) The master connection server should give the option to disable connections to a pool from the security server.

2.) If that is not an option, it should be able to lookup the entitlements of the user that authenticates and pass the request over to the replica that the person is entitled to.

Am I missing something? Is there another way of doing this?

User on Thin client gets "Unknown Username or bad password" intermittent

$

I have one specific user who gets "Unknown Username or bad password" for her windows account on a Wyse P25. One work around we found is after her failed login attempt, I login with my domain admin account and sign off. She can then login with no problem. The View Composer server that sign's on for the Windows users has logs in event viewer as "Audit Failure, sub status 0xc0000064" which I believe the code translates to "username does not exist". I find this odd obviously because she has an account and she can sign on sometimes. Does anyone have any ideas?

Side notes:

She is often signed on a physical machine but locks this computer before trying to sign in any where else. She has tried signing off completely, but we still see the same error. Also we thought that since it saves usernames, that it might be saving some kind of credentials (hence me signing in and off) but she has tried logging onto other thin clients that she hadn't signed on before but still got the error.  The VM pool is based off of a Win7 machine in a Windows 2008r2 domain. No other user has this problem, but no other user signs on multiple locations like she does.

Cannot See vSGA Options in Horizon View 5.2

I currently have a brand new VMware Horizon View 5.2 environment.  The build number is the latest i can download 987719.

My issue is when i go through the pool creation wizard i do not see the options for the vSGA.  The 3D Rendering Options appear as they did in previous versions where it just says Enabled/Disabled.  I realize that there should be more options, Automatic/Hardware/Software/Disabled.

Why if i am on the latest build would this be missing?  Is there some hardware requirement that i am missing?.  I compared my view server with the hardware reqs and they seemed to match.

Any thoughts on this?

Also while I'm at it i can't really find details on what those different options are actually doing.  What is the difference between the hardware and software options?

Thanks guys,

SB

View 5.2 pool only available on one connection server

We have 2 connection servers, one for internal access, one for external access with an associated security server.  I have created a manual pool and assigned VMs to the pool and made the entitlements.  I can see the pool if I connect via the security server from an external source.  When I connect via the internal connection server, the pool is not available (not visible at all).  This is the second time I've had this issue.  Previously after creating some other test pools, the problem pool suddenly appeared and could be accessed as expected.  Is there some sync process that is failing here?  All other pools on the internal connection server are functioning as expected.

View 5.2 Automated Full Clone - ComputerName=VM name vs. sysprep.xml

Hi'

We have been using View since 4.x and have always been using linked clones. Linked clones are easy,but has some disadvantages which makes managing them, take up more time. Also, with the devlopment in storage where single instance block level storage is possible,we really wan't to go for Full Clones.

Now, before with linked clones, i just used QuickPrep for AD placement at "sysprepping". This for some reason is not possible when i'm doing full clones (why?)

Anyway, have a sysprep.xml file (this is the unattended.xml files from the physical pc's renamed) where multiple stuff is connfigured,like AD placement and computername.... I just wan't to use some variable in the <ComputerName>%VMNAME%</ComputerName> part...is this possible?

Any "reference guides"on Full clones? Loads out there for Linked Clones.

Hi, I'm creating desktop pools in Horizon View 5.2 and I cannot enable the "Reclaim VM disk space" option, it's grayed out. vSphere version is 5.1-. Does anyone know how can I enable it?

Kind regards.

Im looking at setting up a replica for my connection server.  I was just wondering if someone can help me with a couple of questions i have:-

1). The Replica will be on subnet in our organisation is this possible?

2). What gets replicated between the Connection servers?

3). Based on the answer to Question 2 do the Pools and Desktops get replicated ie do i need to setup the same VDI machines on the secondary location ESX Servers?

4). The Security Server i take it this can only be connected to 1 Connection Server at a time, i cannot specify 2 connections servers in the 1 security server?

Thanks

Chris

Hello folks,

Wondering if anyone sees this error when trying to check out a VM from View 5.1 over the internet (through Security server)?

Works fine when I am on the LAN.

Are transfers supported over the internet?

Thanks,

Since many version of View, we need to manage the events_data_historical growth. Why nothing is done about this ?

Do you know if a View database optimisation / guidelines document exist ?

Problem connecting to VMware Horizon View 5.2 from XP 32-bit workstation

$

I am working on a newly-installed VMware Horizon View 5.2 installation which is working flawlessly, except from 1 XP desktop on the LAN.

On this desktop, connecting to a View desktop (PCoIP) results in a continued "Connecting to desktop" in the View client. Cancelling the process doesn't reset either or let you log-on as another user. To go back to square one, you have to kill the VMware processes manually and the connection will still be unsuccessful. The VIew Manager never acknowledges the attempt to connect from this desktop in the event log.

Any ideas on what the conflict might be?

Normally, I would just re-instal XP (or something more recent), but this is the boss's desktop and any suggestion of re-instaling "his" system gets a "over my dead body." H refuses to acknowlege a successful installation of Horizon View until the desktops work on his desktop. Yes, I turned off antivirus and firewall.

Thanks in advance!

Persona Management sync issues for certain files/folders (broken pinned icons)

$

I recently noticed that users who logged off too quickly from a linked clone pool after their first session would be greeted by white/blank icons for the default pinned applications on the task bar.  The result from the user perspective is similar/identical to:

Broken pinned icons

Re: Windows 7 Quick Launch Error WEIRD

http://vmtoday.com/2013/01/blank-quicklaunch-icons-on-view-desktop/

However, the details are slightly different and the fixes are already in place.

Brief background on the setup:  I am using Horizon View 5.2 w/ FP2.  The ViewPM.ADM template is attached to the GPO and the "Rom local settings folders" option is enabled.  The Profile upload interval was 10 minutes but was reduced to 5 minutes for testing.  Profile folders are shared/permissioned properly and this seems to be a failure with the persona management software on the pool VM as the data will eventually be uploaded if the user does not log out before the first (possibly second) sync.  The pool is set to refresh immediately after logoff.  Client Side Caching is disabled so KB2016416 should not apply.  The pool was creating using the deployment guide and the provided scripts from VMware, etc.  However, the client firewall was re-enabled so HTML Access in Feature Pack 2 will work.

To test I used an affected pool and deleted my existing profile on the file server.  After logging in to the pool VM, the username.V2 folder was created in the Persona repository share.  At this point, the folder is blank.  The VM works as expected without problems.  If I examine the local profile in the VM, all of the folders and files affected by this issue exist (C:\users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick launch).

I let 5 minutes pass and Persona Management does an initial sync creating what looks to be a full sync.  However, if I examine the "\\server\share\username.V2\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\" folder, it only contains desktop.ini and two shortcuts ('Show desktop' and 'Switch between windows').  Missing are the actual shortcuts for the pinned items and a few other folders ("User Pinned" and "User Pinned\TaskBar") including more shortcuts.

If I let 5 more minutes pass for another sync, the missing files will appear.  At this point if I log off, all is well (unless there are other files that PM fails to copy).  Running "openfiles /query /v" on the file server shows more files being sync'd during logoff.

If I log off before all of the files are successfully synchronized, the next time I log on I'll be greeted with white icons for the pinned programs.

Version 5.1.1 claimed to have resolved a problem similar to this when a pool was set to refresh immediately, so perhaps there is yet another related bug?

I have opened a support case but posting here in case anyone else has experienced and resolved this issue.

NVIDIA GRID K1 and vmware view 5.2 on vSphere 5.1u1

Hi,

I have a worry with that configuration.

The goal is to have vSGA working.

My server is an IBM x3650 M4.

I have 3 PCI devices on it.

  • FC adapter for the storage
  • APEX 2800 (offload PCOIP)
  • NVIDIA GRID K1

My IBM BIOS is well configured with "64 bit PCI ressource" enable and graphic card "on board device".

But xorg don't want to start and the Xorg.log is empty.

I see something strange in the result of the command "esxcli hardware pci list -c 0x0300 -m 0xffc".

the "module name" is set to "none" for all NVIDIA GRID PCI, I think it have to be at "nvidia"

And

the file /etc/vmware/driver.map.d/nvidia.map is empty.

I have a SR open, but I really need some help on this case.

some commands & results
