Can't get parent VM to appear in list for clone

I've done this a half dozen times before and I can't figure out what I am missing.

 

Horizon 7, I've created a Windows 7 SP1 VM, I've run the VMWare optimization tool on it, i've installed vmware tools, and the horizon 7 agent on it.  I've joined it to the domain, activated windows.  Shut it down, created snapshot.

 

yet when i go to create a clone pool it doesn't show up as an available parent vm, even if i click the checkbox show all parent vm's it doesn't show up.  What silly thing did I forget to do ?


Horizon, Quickprep, Linked Clones, KMS and the CMID Help

I am currently trying to get KMS working with our Horizon linked clones

 

We are running into the duplicate CMID issue when generating our linked clones..

 

I come across this post Windows 7 QuickPrep CMID  which suggested that Quikprep should rearm but I'm not seeing this.. (didn't want to necro that old thread)

 

is there anything special that needs to happen on the gold master for the rearm process to create a new CMID?

 

Do we need to rearm our gold master?

 

We would like to avoid the sysprep route as quikprep has worked so solidly for us up to this point

VMWare View Client not respecting NO_PROXY environment variables on CentOS

Hey all,

 

I seem to have encountered a bit of an issue when using the VMWare View Client on my CentOS desktop environment.

 

All outbound internet access is configured to use a proxy, this is defined within *_proxy environment variables, gsettings (Gnome) and /etc/environment

 

In each location, I have configured a list of hosts/IPs that are internal to the network and thus should bypass the proxy, this is working great for everything except for the View client.

 

As per: VMware KB:     VMware Horizon View Client cannot connect to a View Connection Server host in a proxy server environment I have the broker address set within "NO_PROXY" and have verified I can connect to it over HTTPS in my webbrowser.  When attempting to connect using the View client, it instantly fails with "Error: A network error occurred" and I see a matching hit on the proxy server.

 

I'm a bit stumped as to why the View client is not bypassing the proxy, as a test I set up Nginx on my workstation as a reverse proxy and tried to get the View client to connect to https://127.0.0.1, an address that is also configured in "NO_PROXY", this also fails and I see the recorded hit on the proxy server.

 

This seems like a bug to me as the client is documented to pull its no proxy values from the environment variables yet in my case, certainly isn't doing so.

 

Has anyone encountered this before?  Any ideas on the fix?

Credentials being cached in blast session even after browser was closed

Hi,

 

I was wondering if anyone has come across this issue and not thought that it is a security risk ?

 

The issue arises when a user has connected to a blast session (with other browser windows and tabs open), and decides to close the session by either closing the tab it is in or by closing the browser window (while other browser windows are open). If the user was to then open another tab or window and put in the URL for the portal, the page does not ask for login credentials and lets them straight back to the page showing all their published apps and available desktops.

 

This is a major security hole. All credentials should have been disregarded when the tab or browser window was closed, much like how a bank deals with users doing online banking. So if you were to close any tab or browser you would be asked for your credentials to log in again.

 

We see this as being an issue if and when a user is using a public terminal (or even a laptop and a trade fair) and does not LOGOFF but just closes the browser assuming that the session is closed. Anyone could jumped onto the terminal they were on and open the blast URL and be straight in.

 

The only way the user credentials would be disregarded would be when every browser window has been closed.

 

This issue could very well be mitigated if there was a session timeout option that would disconnect the blast session yet keep any active connections to apps and desktops running. Much like what Citrix can do. I have raised the issue with VMware with regards to these timeouts (desktop sessions and blast timeouts), but they say these are not there and not sure when they will be.

 

At the moment we have had to disable SSO, which is a real shame because the solution was so slick with SSO enabled. It has also forced us to start looking at a Citrix solution as they have the idle timeouts available. We like the VMware product and would preferably not move away from it if we had to.

 

VMware support told me to put this through as a "Feature Request", but personally I think this is a bug.

 

We are using VMware Horizon 7.

 

Is anyone at VMware aware of this issue (besides the support person that took my call and raised the case) ? Has anyone else come across this and found a way to fix this ?

White screen and disconnect when trying to connect to connection server externally

Ok I have a very simple View 7 environment setup with 1 connection server (no security server for now)

 

Internally I can connect with View 7 client and log in to desktop no problem.

 

Externally, I can connect, authenticate and client says logging into desktop then i just get a white screen and disconnect after about 30 seconds.

 

I have ports 443tcp, 4172tcp/udp, and 8443 all open to the view server.

 

What else am i missing that would allow it to work internally but not externally ?

I have a question, we have a requirement from one of our customers to setup a vmware view environment with dual facto authentication using RSA securID on an IPv6 network.

 

Vmware does not support securID on IPv6

 

Could we setup the vmware view environment behind F5 with a proxy to NAT from IPv6 to IPv4 to allow the use of public facing IPv6 addresses using SecurID

hi,

a question

 

we want to setup horizon view with 2 factor auth. thru radius

in a test it works already for al the clients , but if we want it to work in the production, we want to separate intern and extern users .

 

is it possible ( if yes, howto ) to make it for extern use only ? 

 

sow intern users have not to use  the 2 factor auth.  but extern user do have

I'm setting up VDI for training rooms and would like the view client to not show the last user name of the person who logged in last.   Is there a GPO/Registry for this?

I have install the windows 7 SP1, however it is so slow when I windows update in windows 7. But it`s normal in windows server in VM

Hi,

 

  We have a VMware Horizon 6 View Server were we have implemented a new pool for VDI's installed with Windows 7. This pool has been configured the same way we have configured the pools for VDI's in Windows XP, the only difference is the master that we use is installed in W7.

 

  The VDI's seems work fine but we have two anomalies that's possible you could know:

 

1- In our vCenter we are 5 "Recompute virtual disk digest" messages every minute.

    Our vCenter hosts the Composer and have 2Cores and 12Gb RAM memory.

 

2- We have in the "vmware-viewcomposer.log" the messages below about every 5 seconds.

Hi,

 

Can someone tell me if vDGA with VMware View works with any AMD card?

 

For NVIDIA cards in the manual says you to run "MontereyEnable.exe –enable" to make it work but it doesn't mention anything regarding AMD cards.

Security server access to internal network

Hello all,

 

I try to setup an html connection from Internet to our internal VM desktops.

From our internal network, all network trafic goes through the Connection Server which is on the internal network, no problem.

From Internet, the connection is made to the Security Server but when we try to access our View Desktop, the Security Server is trying to reach the desktop with its private address which is not reachable from the DMZ.

 

The Blast Secure Gateway seems to be configured correctly, and we try to avoid pluging a 2nd network card on the security server to access our private network.

Any idea about this problem ?

I have read many documentation about such a configuration, and it seems it should be possible without a second network card which is not recommended.

Horizon View 6 - Zero clients can't see RDS Deskstop

Hello!

 

We have been using View for several years.  I just deployed an RDS Desktop.  If I connect to the View server with the Horizon View software client, I can see the desktop as an option, along with other desktops to which I am entitled.  However, when I connect to the server with a Wyse Zero Client (P20s and P25s), I can see other Automated and Manual desktop pools, but the RDS Desktop pool is not listed.

 

Is this configuration not supported?  Is there a setting required to allow connects to RDS Desktops?

After I upgraded one of the Tera2 zero clients to 4.7, I was able to connect to the RDS desktop pool.

View Transfer Server Package stuck in Pending Delete state

Hi All,

 

My transfer server got crashed and I have prepared a new one. After I added the new server to view Administrator, it's giving a "Bad transfer repository" error. The only transfer package in the contents is in a "Pending delete" (view connection server no longer uses the transfer server repository on which this transfer package was published) state. please help to fix this issue.

 

KMS Activating Office 2010, 2013 and 2016

I have had KMS setup and working for quite a while now, activating my office 2010 and 2013 pools (we have to keep 2010 on a certain pool for a particular app that works with it). I recently updated a couple of pools to office 2016 so i setup the KMS host to actovate 2016 also. All working well, or so i thought!

 

I now have discovered my 2010 pools are saying they are not activated and whatever i try i just can't get them to work with KMS. I can see on the KMS host that office 2010 is there:

But whenever i try and activate the count does not increase, it stays at 1 and on the client trying to activate it says the standard error about the count reorted by KMS is insufficient. However, when i run ospp.vbs /dstatusall i get an error saying the product key is not available. I have checked the registry and the keys are in place for the KMS server under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OfficeSoftwareProtectionPlatform.

So, i thought i'd quickly create a temp snapshot using a MAK key and recompose the pool, but users now get prompted to activate the key online and when they click to do so get told that this action requires admin privilieges.


Any ideas appreciated. KMS drives me to despair with office but i thought i had it all working. Are 2016 and 2010 not supported on the same KMS server? Do i need to reinstall the 2010 kms host.


Modify INI file in Windows directory per user

I'm attempting to set up an application to work with Horizon View (v5.3).  The initial install of the application in the gold image creates an INI file in the Windows directory.  The INI file contains workstation and logon names.  I'd like this information to be unique for users who log on to the VDI desktop.  The VDI desktops are linked-clone floating.  Is there a way to store this INI file in the user's persona so that it would overlay the one in the Windows directory?

Has anyone experienced issues with Persona Managment/V2 folders not syncing? We have several users over the last few months who their profiles stop updating after experiencing no issues for months/years. One test we do is save a document to the desktop, reboot, when the user logs back in the document is gone.

Issue Between View and Specific Wyse Terminals

Hoping someone can recommend some direction for a peculiar issue we're seeing.

 

In our View 6.2 environment, we have the following structure:

 

Overall site GTM via F5, we'll call it connectvdi.site.com

 

DC1:

5 Internal View Brokers - All 5 Behind a Site LTM, we'll call dc1-connectvdi.site.com

2 External View Brokers

 

DC2:

5 Internal View Brokers - All 5 Behind a Site LTM, we'll call it dc2-connectvdi.site.com

2 External View Brokers

 

The F5 setup is completely load balanced. We have onsite Wyse 5010 ThinOS w/ PCoIP terminals all configured to go to the GTM, which then load balances to the LTMs. Quite randomly, we will see the Wyse terminals boot up and land at their login with all boxes grayed out with a message of "Contacting Authentication Server...". After no specific time, they will eventually come back and present you with normal login credential boxes. If the terminal is connected already to View, they run fine, they do not get interrupted.

 

While the issue is happening, we've troubleshot several scenarios and have it narrowed down as such:

 

  • Pointing the terminals to the DC1 LTM, they all continue to work without issue. No problem whatsoever.
  • Pointing the terminals to the DC2 LTM, the issue persists. It does NOT work as a resolution bypassing the GTM.
    • Pointing the terminals to the DC2 View brokers 1 at a time via FQDN does NOT work either. Issue persists.
    • Pointing the terminals to the DC2 view brokers 1 at a time via IP DOES resolve the issue. Suddenly they start to work.

 

While all this is going on, pings look fine, nslookups resolve no problem, tracerts seem to behave as expected, etc. We can't spot something specific. It looks obvious that it's a DC2 issue, but, we have 3 other Wyse terminal platforms: V10L (ThinOS), and R50 and D50D terminals (SUSE Linux). None of these terminals exhibit the same problems as the 5010. The network guys blame Dell, and the Dell guys blame the network.

 

My reason for posting here is to see if the DC2 view brokers could be the issue for whatever reason. I've compared them side by side with DC1, and I can't spot an issue. Not sure anyone has a setup even close to what we're doing, but, if anyone has a similar experience, I'd appreciate some feedback.

Horizon 7 Instant Clones and User Profiles

I am new to the VDI world, and I'm testing out version 7 instant clones.  The concept is great but I have an issue.  I have the VMs deleting themselves once a user logs off, this works fine but when the user logs back in the machine will sit while a new profile is created.  I am running Windows 10 on the parent VM.  I have tried to redirect the AppData folder as well as use UEM but still have the same building profile hold up at every login. Is there a way to use Instant Clones like this without having to build a new user profile at every login?  Since I am new to this I was hoping there is just something I'm over looking here.  Any help would be appreciated.
