Persona and Folder Redirection philosophies

$

Hello all,

I am new to VMWare view and all of its glory, and am a bit stumped on how to handle Folder Redirection, and all the ways to do it.

I have had a traditional workstation/server environment.  Each user has a single workstation and signs onto it, and their entire profile is contained on that workstation.  There is no folder or profile redirection.  Sometime in the past with this company they tried roaming profiles and since then, they never wanted to do anything else.

Well, with VDI, we know that with Persona, we can have their profile on a directory share, and as a part of the persistent disk...I believe.  Initially we thought that the persistent disk was only going to contain Appdata.  As it turns out, it contains the ENTIRE profile by default...at least with what we have set.  We see that a test user's entire profile is set on the profile share, and it kinda acts like a roaming profile....kinda.  When a user logs into a workstation, they get that Persona.  When they log into a VDI session, they get that persona.  However...this is okay with a new virgin user.  What about those users that have a 50 gb profile because they saved everything local?  Our persistent disk is only 5 gb.  There is no way that they can have a 50+ gig persistent disk....so we thought...folder redirection.

We already know about the folder redirection stuff in Windows.  Yet there is a folder redirection thing in the vmware persona group policy too.  Which one should we use?  I have looked up and down the internet and it seems like there is bad and good to them both.  What happens to those people who sign into both a computer and a VDI session at the same time?

Right now, we are at a bit of loss on what to do or the best way to handle Persona and folder redirection and would love to engage anyone who has done it successfully in their environment.  We have a vmware partner onsite and we are working it out with them too.  I just want some more ideas on how to do this.

TIA

Persona management - extremely high logon times

$

Hello,

we're using a dynamic windows 7 pool with persona management activated via GPO.

Whenever a user logs on a desktop for the first time (so no local profile exists), the logon times can be up to 1 hour!

The client shows the windows status "waiting for user profile service".

Here are some lines from the persona log (the user name here is "sgsas"):

VDI desktop local print spoolers needing to be restarted after print server reboot overnight

Hi,

Wondering if anyone has come across the problem we are experiencing, we like to reboot our print server overnight to clear down any issues with the print spooler, it enables us to clear down any stuck print jobs etc. Up until the past month we could do this causing no problems but recently the following day after a print server reboot we have noticed calls being logged where users printers are not being mapped on logon (we have a simple batch start-up script for this), investigating further it appears the local print spooler will not work until the VDI desktop is reset or we manually restart the local print spooler service, this only happens after a print server reboot which is done out of hours, if this was happening during working hours I can foresee how this might cause problems but I dont understand why it would be effecting local print spoolers on the VDI desktops. Any idea?

We are running a VMWare View 4.6 environment, print server is setup on Windows 2008 32-bit Std.

Hello everyone

I own a server with vSphere 5 installed, running multiple Win7 virtuals. One of the virtuals is a View Server server, where I manage/assign users and persistent disks with virtual machines.

Yesterday, a coleague tried to access his virtual machine, via view client, the authorization was successful, but a message about logon service failure appeared.

I tried to boot with admin profil to check the registry and repair the corrupted profil, but the profil is located on disk D (persistent)

Is there any way to repair this corrupted profile?

Thank you very much in advance

Help Desk tools for deploying VDI workstations???

Are there any tools or suggestions for simplifying the virtual desktop provisioning process?  I ask this so our help desk doesn't have to log into the View Admin portal to manage the environment or provision workstations.  I was hoping there was a resource, config wizard or web portal available to use where the View Admin console works in the background while the user requesting a VDI just inputs their desired config parameters (ie- user name, type of VDI, etc.).   Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

View Client 3.3 msi install options

Hello all,

I am trying to get the MSI install for view to use in ZCM, to install the view client automatically and silently.

I got the latest view client.exe from online and performed an administrative install, which gave me an msi and a bunch of other files.  I did do a hash on the file and determined that it was a good download.

I got the msi and all the files, and I am trying to use it to do the install.  Not working.

I am running "msiexec /i  VMware-Horizon-View-Client-X86_64-3.3.0-2507564.msi /qn"

Nothing happens or installs.

Ideas?

View Agent uninstall failed - View Composer guest server service

Hello,

I tried to uninstall the View agent 5.3, but the installer hanged on stopping services... portion. Looking at the services.msc, the Horizon View Composer Guest Agent server service was still running. Trying to stop the service manually results in the prompt to stop a dozen more services related to OS. Looking at it, I found that View Composer Guest Agent server has inserted itself as a dependency for BFE, Netlogon, and TCP/IP Protocol Driver services, which also, in turn, makes every services that are dependent on those three services to be dependent on View Composer Guest service.

view composer agent dependency.png

I am seeing this behavior all the way up to 6.0.2 Agent (not sure about 6.1 Agent). Why is View Composer service inserting itself as a dependency for critical OS services? I mean, really VMware? REALLY??

Hello,

we want to provision Lync as a RDSH Hosted Application, but at the moment only mass storage USB devices are supported for redirection in View RDSH sessions. For Lync we need the Support of Headsets. Does someone know when this will be supported or if the support is on any Roadmap?

Upgrade View from 5.3.0 to 6.1?

I was reading the upgrade notes for 6.1 and I was confused if I needed to upgrade to 5.3.3 BEFORE going to 6.1 or if I can go straight to 6.1 from 5.3.0?  I am thinking the latter but I wanted to be sure before I gave it a go.  Anyone else done this upgrade recently?

Thanks in advance

Persona locking a file

$

Hey all,

Brand new View 6.0 environment using Persona Management. We have a Microsoft Office add-in that is causing a lot of issues. I have Persona setup for a 10 min interval and I can recreate the issue within 10 mins every time it seems. The problem is when Excel launches and loads the add-in, it edits an XML file, that's just how the add-in works. I am finding that I am randomly getting an error message that the XML file is in use. I thought it was anti-virus and excluded everything under the sun and then completely disabled it and still could recreate the error.

Is it possible that Persona is locking this file somehow when it replicates? If not, any suggestions on what to look at next? Backups don't run on the workstations obviously, but do run on the server the Persona files are stored on but I didn't think that would conflict.

Horizon View 5.3 - desktop "delete" status, revoke

Hi,

I'm not sure 100% the series of events, but we have a desktop pool with auto-assigned users.  For some reason, a user has been assigned to two desktops.  One of those desktops was someone elses and they have been assigned a new desktop.

The desktops that have the same user assigned, is left with one of them in a "deleting" state, but is stuck.  What I am hoping to achieve is to prevent this from being deleted and assign the original user back to it.  All task options on this "deleting" desktop is grayed out.

Is there some way to salvage this?

Hi All,

I am currently setting up a testing environment which allows me to test on Remote Desktop Hosted application. My environment setup is:

- View 6.1

- 1 x Connection Server

- 1 x Security Server

- 1 x RDS Farm

With my current connection and security server setup (see the picture below), i can connect to connection server when I am connecting to local LAN network.

Connection Server:

Security Server:

But when I try to connect from external through security server from windows View Client 3.3, I got the error below after I passed the login while on my android phone my app launched just fine.

error.png

And if I unchecked the HTTPS and Blast Secure Tunnel option, my windows client works fine. Is this the way it should be configured when I want to access from external network via desktop client? Or there is some possible configuration is not correctly configured?

vcs2.png

I have port 4172 (TCP & UDP), 443, and 8443 opened from my router which points to security server. Also have connection and security server turned off for troubleshooting purposes. Need some advices and appreciate for the help.

Thanks

Odd issue.  It seems that when someone logs into our Horizon View environment (Win 8.1), they can't retain their Microsoft online account after logging out.  The user has to reconnect it again every time he/she logs on.  Any ideas why that's happening?

D:\ user profile (10GB Independent Persistent disk)

The issue is the C drive is 30GB Thin Provision in total, with 6GB of free space.  I have disabled the disk defrag, system restore is 3% (900MB).

The only thing that gets installed are the Windows updates on patch Tuesday.  The programs we use are static they don't really change.

So no new installs of any kind except for updates to Java and Adobe.  I install one piece of software once a year.

The users don't have rights to install software on their vPC.

I regularly run the disk cleanup for the C drive, but find that not much space is reclaimed.

I would like to expand the C drive of the 30GB but option is grayed out for the vPC (See attached screenshot).

I went into the VMware View Administrator to see if I can expand the C drive about unable to locate the area where I can expand it.

I do see the area where I can expand the persistent disk but not for the OS disk.

The plan was to expand the OS disk then recompose the specific desktop as the need arise.

Can you please advise if this is possible to expand the OS 30GB in VMware view?
Also this vPC's are from a Linked clone

PCoIP over HTTPS/SSL for external users?

Hi there,

Does anyone know if it's possible to configure incoming external View connections to use HTTPS/SSL rather than PCoIP?  Although HTTPS is used at the connection/authentication stage, it then hands over to PCoIP for the user's session.  There's a financial incentive for us to achieve this as our mobile data provider gives us free HTTPS/SSL over 3G/4G.

I guess an SSL VPN would help, but this would require the user to manually connect to a VPN each time they use the View client.  It would be easier for our end users to simply login to the View Horizon client on the mobile devices just as they normally would.

Thanks in advance!

The connection to Remote Desktop ended - View 5.2 version

Dear Experts,

One of the user reported "The connection to Remote Desktop ended" while accessing his desktop. When I verified in View Administrator console on his recorded evernts are success, and no other VDI machines reported such issue in same pool. The allocated machine can able to RDP - MSTSC from his credentials from all other accessing desktop or location. While the user connecting form View client it is preparing for desktop end up with "The connection to Remote Desktop Ended".

Pool settings:

Type: Automated Pool

User assignment: Dedicated Assignment

Enable automatic assignment : Yes

Max No of desktop: 360

Min No of desktop: 100

No of spare desktop (Power on): 20

Tried some work around couldn't help:

1. Verified View administrator user events are success - but the user is not obtaining his desktop from View client.

2. The allocated desktop is connecting via Microsoft RDP with his credentials from all location (Asia/Europe/Americas) - No error reported View Agent logs from event viewer.

3. The user domain ID verified and deleted and recreated still the same error message poping up.

4. Validated all ports connection from his desktop/firewall - all OK.

5. Validated Connection server logs - Looks good.

6. User assigned desktop - unassigned from pool and tried logging to obtain new desktop - not success, Tried assigning New desktop still user having same error.

6. For the testing the user entitled to multiple pools, however the user view client inventory not showing any entitled assigned desktop -Strange behavior, Same other users are applied it is working.

7. Possible logs captured from View client below to add your comments

Horizon View client gets stuck at connecting

Hi

We have had Horizon 6 in for a while and everything worked great. Recently we have had an issue with Horizon clients getting stuck at the connecting screen (before you enter your credentials). It might take 3-4 attempts to connecting before it will finally work. There doesn't seem to be any performance issues in the sessions them self's. We just upgraded to 6.1 and the problem persists. I have setup access via HTML and this works perfectly and is not affected by any login connection issues. Any advice on this issue?

Thanks

The reported server is reachable via RDP and View Services are running.
