View 6.0.1 Persona/DFS repository issues (profile data lost)

I'm having some issues with Persona saving profiles on a DFS share.

We're running View 6.0.1 with floating linked-clones and Persona for profile management. The repository for the profiles lies on a DFS share.

Sometimes after users log off, all that's saved to their profile folder (username.V2) is a hidden folder with a name similiar to {d24f2895-651a-40cc-8e5c-c037b9994104} and inside that is a {d24f2895-651a-40cc-8e5c-c037b9994104}.db and a lock.{d24f2895-651a-40cc-8e5c-c037b9994104} file. Upon logging in again, their profile isn't loaded, but another one of these folders is created (and deleted again after logging off). No notification pops up saying it loaded a temporary windows profile and the eventlog seems fine, a persona entry says it loaded 2 files. When i delete or rename this hidden folder, a new profile is created. I've had to recover around 5 profiles from backup... I can't figure out why this is happening. NTFS rights are correct.

After analyzing the log files after a log in with an affected profile (could only get the ones after a log in, as i can't recreate the error above) i found the following:

[0][01/21/2015 14:34:38:0184][VPLogonNotify_OnLogon] Logon Started: 13:34:38:184

- The time isn't correct, left is the computer time of the VM replica right? What's the other time?

[0][01/21/2015 14:34:38:0934][VMWCreateMetadataTable] Failed Creating Table: 慴汢⁥敭慴慤慴愠牬慥祤攠楸瑳s, 1

- No idea why there are chinese characters in the logfile?

To be honest I don't know what exactly i'm looking for in the logfile... I'm just wondering where the hell the profile data is actually going or where it is lost?!

Any help is appreciated.

Viewing user PCoIP session as an admin

Hi,

We have recently deployed a good amount of virtual desktops using Horizon 6 and working perfectly fine but I have a little security/privacy issue.

As an admin, I can view users' sessions while they are working for troubleshooting purposes but executives don't want this for their desktops.

I know I can keep them in a separate OU and disable console view but then troubleshooting would be difficult for me.

I am just wondering if there is any config or setting somewhere which notifies the user when my techs start viewing their sessions?

Or, any other recommendations for this issue?

Thank you,

Double mouse cursor

I'm testing the Horizon client on an Android device for potential deployment to users and have two mouse cursors at all times.  One from our VDI Windows 7 OS installed on the client and the other from the Android host (Cisco DX80 and DX650 in this case).

Attached is a picture.  How do I disable the host cursor while working in a VM?  It's too distracting for me to continue my tests, much less recommend for our users.

The Horizon client is the latest version available, 3.2.0-2331566.  I'm happy to provide any other pertinent info.

Corrupt User Profiles With Persona

Hi All,

I'm currently trying to track an intermittent problem with corrupt user profiles when using persona management on View desktops. We've been having hardware problems lately, so user's VMs have been going down while they're logged in. We've been having some corrupt profiles happen a lot recently and I think they're related. While I'm not surprised that user profiles get corrupt if a VM if the host it's running on goes down, I'm wondering what the expected behavior is supposed to be in the following cases:

1) VM of logged in Persona user gets reset via View Administrator

2) Host goes down or datastore detaches while user is logged into VM with persona management enabled.

I've noticed on the persona share a hidden directory and lock files called "{08C31585-259A-4341-9982-78E42EAF6106}\computername.0.lck". A VMware support engineer has told me that Persona management does not create this folder and file. However, when I go to delete it, it tells me that the file is currently opened by "VMWare Horizon View Persona Management". I'm guessing the support engineer was wrong and this is how Persona management maintains the profile to be used by one logged in user at a time.

Can someone explain to me how this is supposed to work? Is profile corruption an expected result of a VM of a logged in user being reset, or is this considered a bug? If the lock file doesn't get cleaned up properly, what is the expected behavior?

Thank you

VSAN and Horizon View 6: PBM error on pool

$

Hi all,

I have an Horizon View 6 production envinronment (vCenter 5.5U2). Last month I have enabled VSAN on this vCenter and all seems green. I have created a new pool that points on vsandatastore for VMs provisioning, but after a minute, the pool goes disabled. The error is "Error during provisioning: PBM Subsystem couldn't be initialized."

I have searched on this forum and I have found only a post, but the error seems different.

I have noticed that, when I try to view the datastores list during pool creation, I receive an error like "java.lang.null.pointer.exception" (and I have noticed that the column Overcomittment is not present). After closed this popup, I select the datastore and press OK. But after a minute, when View Composer try the provisioning, I receive the error listed before.

Any idea?

Thanks to all!

I am currently rolling out VMWare view for the first time in a test environment and have hit an issue I have not been able to work around despite various google searches and trial and error.

Hoping someone here could suggest something.

VMWare view versions are all 6.0.1.

vCenter is on an appliance.

VMWare view connection manager is on a server 2012 R2 VM.

VMWare view composer is on a seperate server 2012 R2 VM.

I have an SQL server 2012 install on a separate server 2012 R2 VM.

SQL databases have been configured for the view composer to be able to reach it, it is using ODBC 64-bit via SQL Server Native Client 11.0.

I have tried troubleshooting this by swapping to 32-bit but this did not connect, so seems 64-bit is correct.

I have a windows 7 64-bit enterprise VM as my golden image. It has VMWare tools on it and VMWare agent on it.

The VM had ipconfig/release performed on it, it was then shut-down and a snapshot taken as my source.

The issue is that when I go to deploy a desktop pool I am getting the error shown above.

If I connect to the created VM via vCenter the persistent and temporary drives show fine.

Based on the error I have tried various adjustments such as changing the path for the VMs DVD drive from D: to Z:, spreading the persistant and temporary drives over multiple data-stores or single data-stores and even removing the VMs DVD drive altogether. I have also looked at the logs under view composer but can find nothing to explain the behaviour.

SQL server seems to be working for the setup as error logs are going through and the VMs themselves are being created and added to AD as intended.

I should note the VMs are being done as linked clones.

Can anyone offer a clue as to the cause or something I can check please, have done all the areas I can think of and googling the error does not come up with anything helpful so far.

Thanks,

I am planning on upgrading my Horizon View installation to 6.0.x. I'm currently running View 5.0 with DSFW 11.2, Window 7SP1-64 and ZCM 11.2a

Has anyone tried to use DSFW 11.2 with VMware View 6 or higher? Have you had any issues getting them configured together? If so, what did you do to resolve them?

As additional information, I will also be upgrading to Win 8.1 and using ZCM 11.3a

Recently we were experiencing high log on times and frequent renaming/deleting of user's View Persona related folders. I have seen a users Persona folder create duplicate AppData folders. It would creat it insode the VIew Persona folder where the original AppData is located. It would create it in a hidden folder with a name like {string of characters}, for example. Weare on version 5.3.0 of View. Has anyone experienced something similar?

Parent or Gold image for Floating desktop default profile configuration

Hello,

Recently, we had a lot of changes on our gold/parent images in regards to applications for use in electronic medical records. We are experiencing log on times ranging from 10 seconds to 5 minutes. I wanted to see if anyone knows the procedure for modifying the default profile on a Windows 7 32-bit parent/gold image? I have seen articles and also the Admin guide from VMware but have not been able to correctly configure it. Any assistance would be helpful.

Local Mode losing VT-x support

$

I am trying to check out a 64-bit Windows 7 VM to run in Local Mode with the Horizon View client. This Windows 7 VM has VMwere Player installed which hosts a 64-bit Ubuntu Linux. On the vSphere server environment I have enabled exposing hardware virtualization (VT-x) for this Win 7 VM so that its nesting 64-bit Ubuntu VM can run. But once I have checked out this Win 7 VM to run in Local Mode, it has lost support of exposing VT-x so its nesting 64-bit Ubuntu would not run in the Player. The setting on the Win 7 VM of exposing VT-x (set on the vSphere server environment) seems to have been lost once this VM has been checked out to the Local Mode environment. Or maybe the View Client with Local Mode does not support the checked out VMs to expose VT-x? I am very sure that I have enabled VT-x in the BIOS of my client computer which runs the View Client with Local Mode.

To make what I said simpler:

vSphere (1)   >>>   Contains a 64-bit Win 7 VM (2)   >>>   Has VMware Player (3) installed  >>>   Contains a 64-bit Ubuntu (4)

"Expose hardware assisted virtualization to the guest OS" (VT-x) has been set on (2) so that (3) can run (4). But when (2) has been checked out to Local Mode, it does not expose VT-x any more so that (3) cannot run (4).

Is there a limit to the number of View Connection Servers per license?

$

We would like to setup a second view connection server in our VDI environment to limit downtime during maintenance windows.  I've been unable to find a definitive answer as to whether or not we can have more than one View Connection server with a View license or if it's only one server per license?  Does anyone happen to know the answer to this or able to point me towards the correct documentation?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Restricting View Agent registration

Within the registry of a virtual machine I'm able to restrict the View Agent registration to a particular View Broker.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\VMware,Inc.\VMware VDM\Agent\Configuration\Broker

But after a restart the configuration is changed back to default settings. Is there an way to fix the configuration setting and let the View Agent only communicate with one View Broker?

Blast SSL Cert Question

I hope this question hasn't been asked before, and forgive me if it has. I searched before starting a new discussion...

Typically I have not used the PCoIP SG for any internal connections. Have not yet needed to. Only for External.

Well, we have had a new request to allow Blast connections internally. It would be my desire to also not tunnel this through the CS. The only issue is that doing a Direct Connection to a desktop using Blast is going to throw Cert warnings.

Is anyone doing direct connections using Web Client, and how have you overcome the cert warnings. Cert Warnings =

NAT to Horizon view desktops

$

Hi Guys,

Have an issue setting up a secure Horizon view environment in regards to NAT;

The security server is NAT'd publicly and works fine

The connection server is NAT'd to the Security server in the DMZ and works fine

The issue is that connections to horizon view desktops are always trying to use the INTERNAL IP of the machine and we would like to NAT them (sorry, this bit isn't open to discussion)

the agent gpo has a policy for using the DNS name for resolution of the horizon view desktop "Connect using DNS name" which appears to be for this very situation however the policy does not appear to be taking effect and the security server will always try to use the internal IP (security server can only access the vdi desktop by NAT'd address).

Does anyone know how to force this behavior for the security server?

vCops for View - physical device data, and ports

$

Does anyone know how metrics from physical devices (laptops/desktops) gets reported to vCOps? or vCops for View if it matters. View 5.2, vCops for View 1.7, vCops 5.8.2.

I don't see any port listings that indicate the physical device talks directly to the Analytics VM, so I'm guessing it either talks to the V4H broker agent on the connection server (but don't know which port it would use), or reports to the VM and the VM reports to Analytics. But I can't find any actual documentation. netstat -nao shows an active connection from the VM to the CS on 3092 which matches the port documentation, but I see nothing to the CS from my laptop on 3091 - 3094.

however, when i use vdmadmin to remove said domain, it still shows up in view even though its part of the cluster exclude and broker exclude lists. Really confused.

SSO not working when logging into Win7 VM - Second login required

$

Created new Windows 7 desktop in a linked-clone pool. Using the View Client to access the new VM, I am prompted a second time with the Windows 7 login. It is not passing the credentials through for the SSO login to Windows.

Using this document (KB 1029391) I have checked the following:

To troubleshoot issues when using SSO in a VMware View Environment:

  1. Confirm that the Agent/Client installation or configuration is correct. During installation, select Log in as current user.
    1. This is set in the Client, have tried using both HTML and Client to access, same result. Prompted with Windows login after a successful VMware login.
  2. Verify that disclaimers or login banners are not being used when using PCoIP as the display protocol. For more information, see Black View Client log in screen when using PCoIP (1016961).
    1. No banners or notices are being used or see, there is also no 'black view' symptom.
  3. Confirm that userinit is configured properly to pass credentials. For more information, see Confirming that the userinit string is configured properly (1028975).
    1. Checked and double checked. Copy?pasted right from this document without a change in symptoms.
  4. Confirm that the GINA is chaining correctly. For more information, see Confirming that the GINA is chaining correctly in VMware View Manager 3.x/4.0.x/4.5.x (1029075).
    1. The KB article says this does not apply to Windows 7 desktops.
  5. Ensure that no Group Policy conflict exists. For more information, see Ensuring that there are no conflicts between Group Policy Objects and View virtual desktops (1027446).
    1. Have spent hours looking through the policies using RSOP.MSC, cannot find anything that would seem to be related to the login process.
  6. Ensure that the Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL GPO policy is disabled. For more information, see Single Sign-on does not work in VMware View Desktops (1026797).
    1. This was also checked and set correctly.

I also checked the setting mentioned in KB 1019466:

On Windows Vista, if you install the PCoIP Server component, the Windows group policy Disable or enable software Secure Attention Sequence is enabled and set to Services and Ease of Access applications. If you change this setting, single sign-on does not work correctly.  Ensure that the Windows group policy Disable or enable software Secure Attention Sequence is enabled and set to Services and Ease of Access applications. This is also set as stipulated here.

Anyone have any ideas? I've spent an embarrassing amount of time on this and have not come any closer to getting the SSO to work. I must be missing something -but what?

Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7 sp1 wont start after installing ViewAgnet v6

Hi, we are looking at VMware view 6 but we have an issue where after installing the viewagent version 6 on a Windows 7 32bit box that is fully updated with latest updates IE8 will not start anymore. It starts on the version 5 client and the agent is being installed using a local administration account.

Everything else appears to work.

If we click on the IE icon nothing, not even in the process shows in the task manager.

Any ideas as due to business reasons we can't upgrade IE yet?

VMware Horizon View Client/Blast Customize Domain Selection

Hi Guys,

I'm using VMware Horizon View for 2 different Domains using 2-way trust. When users login through View Client or through VMware View Blast, they can see multiple domains and they have to make selection of their own domain.

Is there a way we can set domain for particular domain or is there a way to hide to different domain users?

Regards,
