Wondering if anyone can help, we are looking to introduce Brother PT-700 label printers into our environment, we currently use HP T310 Zero Clients and Windows 7 x64 desktops, we want to connect the printers locally via USB. I can install the printer onto my own VDI desktop using the drivers provided by Brother and I can print fine. The issue we have is, we run a linked clone environment where the VDI desktops refresh every 7 days and the users do not have administrator permissions to install any drivers/software themselves plus we would prefere to do it ourselves. I planned to install the printer and driver onto the main golden image so all the users have to do is connect it up, the printer/drivers will already be installed plus the virtual printer port for USB will have already been created. The issue we have is that it's not working, users can connect the printer, it recognises the printer because it also maps a drive containing Brother Ptouch software but the printer remains offline, we can re-create the printer locally using the virtual printer port and still it remains offline. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, the only thing I can thing of is that when the virtual printer port is created on the golden image it's mapped to that specific instance (if that makes sense?) of the printer? That port does not even list as available ports until I actually install the printer drivers onto the golden image or my test VDI desktop. I don't think this is an issue with the zero client or USB mapping etc due to the fact I can install and use the printer with no problems on my own VDI desktop.
I've got a feeling this will only work if the users themselves install the printer/drivers and connect it up during the installation process (midway through installation of the printer/drivers it asks for the printer to be connected via USB before proceeding, on the golden image install I do that myself), at which point it will create the virtual printer port for USB. Issue with that is, they would need permissions to do that and every 7 days that would need to re-install it.
Any help appreciated.
