Horizon View feature request

$

I just added a feature request but as in the past, I suspect I will never hear or see anything of it. Not even a mail saying that it was received copying me my request. Thats pretty bad service.

So for posterity, here was my request:

Add command line and config file properties to control:

+a message in the horizon view username password entry dialog (Some organizations have internal control policies that state that before even entering a username and password that you must see disclaimers so popping one up after you have entered your credentials isnt good enough.)

+customize the messages in the red banner during connection errors (they currently lack clarity especially for an end user)

Ability per pool to specify groups of users that are allowed multiple sessions\desktops (currently we must make multiple pools which is an administrative burden)

View 5.3.1 issue - unable to provision new vm's

Following an incident where the disk hosting my view composer and vcenter databases ran out of space I am no longer able to provision any new vm's. I have increased the disk size and restarted both connection and vcenter servers.

I've gone through all the steps in VMware KB: VMware View Composer resolution guide however I can't seem to pin point the issue. I've checked both the View Composer and Connection server logs and I can't see any obvious error messages but now when I try to either create a new desktop pool or increase the number of machine in any existing pools nothing happens.

I get no errors and apart from the initial vm folder creation on my vcenter I get no activity in vcenter either.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to possible causes?

thanks.

Issues with VMWare View PowerCLI connecting to node manager

$

I need some help in trouble-shooting an odd issue:

We've installed the VMWare View PowerCLI on a server and use the cmdlet Get-DesktopVM to get the list of all VDIs. That all works when I login with RDP to the server and use the VMWare View PowerCLI (which loads the correct snapin).

But I want to automate this and we use HP SA to do this. It logs in with it's own way (which works perfectly fine) and then tries to run the power shell script.

Our script loads the snapin with

. "D:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\Server\extras\PowerShell\add-snapin.ps1"

and then runs Get-DesktopVM

But then it gets this error:

          Welcome to VMware View PowerCLI

Get-DesktopVM : View Server connect FAILED

At C:\temp\rak1.ps1:2 char:14

+ Get-DesktopVM <<<<

    + CategoryInfo          : NotInstalled: (vmware.view.pow...ts.GetDesktopVM

   :GetDesktopVM) [Get-DesktopVM], Exception

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Node Manager not running,vmware.view.powershell.

   cmdlets.GetDesktopVM

As said, the same thing works fine if I login with RDP so I don't think there's anything wrong with VMWare View or the way the PowerCLI is installed.

But something is obviously missing in this powershell environment when logged in via HP SA.

Could someone give me some hints on how to trouble-shoot this? What does Get-DesktopVM need to be able to connect to the Node Manager? Does it look for a file, is this a TCP/IP connection which maybe goes to the wrong address, or how does this work.

I'm already staring at this for many hours and I'm trying all kind of things. For a while I thought we miss the vmtoolsd process and I started it in this shell. But that didn't make a difference either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

View 5.3 Recompose issue - Boot order of HD changes

I recently inherited a VMware View 5.3 environment and I have an issue when I recompose the systems.  I can deploy a new VM from a recent snapshot but every time I recompose the desktops the HD boot order changes in the BIOS and the system cannot boot until I manually modify the order.   I tried to recompose the system to the previous snapshot and had the same issue.  Thoughts?

Changing from a Linked Clone with Persistent Disks to a Full Clone - Persona Manegement

$

I replied to another post on this issue but thought I would start a new one just in case.

I have a new desktop pool of linked clones with persistent hard drives.  It adds a D and E drive for user data and temp data.

I also have view persona management enabled via group policy. So when the user logs in it copies the persona data from a shared folder to the D drive of the linked clone.  Pretty standard setup!

My Documents, Favorites and Desktop are folder redirected using persona management but the other folders are copied using the roaming profile setting described above.

This is working great!

Now the issue is I am running into an issue I am working with VMWare with where when a linked clone is restarted the entire server locks up and we loose connection to the local lun.  This issue doesn't happen with full clones and dedicated machines.

I have the disk space so I want to switch the users from linked clones to full dedicated machines so I can back them up and restore if needed.

The problem is when you log in a user with persona management enabled on the full clone I can't get the desktop to start up.  It gives me the back ground of the desktop and I can run Ctrl-Alt-Del but can't get the start menu to show up.

With logging enabled I can see it referencing the start of explore.exe but nothing after that.

If I turn off persona management then it works fine.  Any ideas on how to resolve this?  I want to continue using Persona Management.  If I log in as an admin it works fine but that profile doesn't use persona management.

Time Zone not synchronizing with new pool

View 5.1

I just built a new Windows 7 pool for an office in Australia. For some reason, the time zone does not sync. All the research I've done (as well as KB article: 1006773) states that the time zone should be pulled from the client by default. I haven't made any changes that I know of that would have disabled this.

Anyone out there running linked clones on a PowerEdge R820? Just trying to get an estimate of how many VM's you run per host. (Yes, I'm familiar wit the VDI calculator, but looking for a real world scenario). Thanks

Hi

I have one employee who changed his name due to marriage so we renamed the AD Object to the new name. But now if we search for the new entry its show up but if we grant the permission for the user its displayed with the older name and the user cannot use his permission to access USB that was granted.

I'm using View version 6.0.1

Anyone got any ideas on updating this information?

Thanks

Disconnections from zero clients

$

Hello:

We are on Horizon 6.1.1 using Samsung NC241 zero clients doing a PoC over our local network (no remote users), all going through one connection server with about 20 clients total. We've run in to an issue where some users on the zero clients are getting disconnected at random times while using the session. It seems to be worse for those that are streaming audio/media, than those that are not. Around the time that they are disconnected, their audio streaming will start getting choppy and eventually the session will lock and shortly after they get the disconnect error. After re-connecting, everything will be fine for a few hours.  I have looked at the Teradici client logs as well as the pcoip_server logs.  About the same time that the client drops, the pcoip_server log will truncate and it will start a new log, which tells me that it might be crashing and relaunching?  In the Windows event viewer I'm seeing the error:

Faulting application name: pcoip_server_win32.exe, version: 3.30.1.27618, time stamp: 0x5554434e

Faulting module name: svgadevtap.dll, version: 9.9.0.6642, time stamp: 0x55482957

Exception code: 0xc0000005

Faulting process id: 0x350c

Faulting application start time: 0x01d1496c7163e1e0

Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Common Files\VMware\Teradici PCoIP Server\pcoip_server_win32.exe

Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\Common Files\VMware\Teradici PCoIP Server\svgadevtap.dll

Report Id: e8fdbad1-b572-11e5-8bc5-005056917711

I'm attaching the pcoip_server log as well.  The drop happens in this log at about the 14:14:38 time mark.  The log truncates, and I have added the beginning section of the next log file to the attachment for reference.  Any idea what this could be?  I've seen some posts with this problem but in our case we're using a standard VM on ESXi 5.5 and no GPUs.

Thanks in advance! !

Horizon View Toolbox 2 Fling

I could not post this in the comments for the Horizon Toolbox 2 – VMware Labs fling, error:

You don't have permission to access "http://labs.vmware.com/wp-comments-post.php" on this server.

Reference #18.6e95dc17.1452539334.1b884f98

Probably had to do with length or content so here it is:

We dont want to install the built in remote assistance but would like the ability to use the existing Microsoft remote assistance (Initiate Remote Assistance from a Command Line or a Script). I was able to modify the registry of my admin machine to handle a new protocol handler to support a new href added to C:\Program Files\VMware\HorizonToolbox\HorizonToolbox2.0.1\webapps\toolbox\WEB-INF\templates\console.html in the toolkit.

This is not a secure way of accomplishing this, perhaps you could find something more appropriate.

The registry keys needed on my local admin machine:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\msra]
@="URL:Microsoft Remote Assistance Protocol"
"URL Protocol"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\msra\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\msra\shell\open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\msra\shell\open\command]
@="cmd /C for /F \"delims=: tokens=2\" %%c in (\"%1\") do msra.exe /offerra %%c"

Added the following html to line 142 of console.html:

<a title="Offer MS Remote Assistance" href="msra:{{vm.name}}" target="_blank">{{vm.name}}</a>

If your url tries to connect to "unsafe:msra:vmname" then you'll need to edit the javascript to add the msra protocol handler. I did this on line 124 in C:\Program Files\VMware\HorizonToolbox\HorizonToolbox2.0.1\webapps\toolbox\js\angular.min.js

change https?|ftp|mailto|tel|file to https?|ftp|mailto|msra|tel|file

Of course you need the proper GPO's deployed to offer remote assistance:

VMware Horizon View 6.0 + Graphics Acceleration doesn't work.

Hello everyone!

Yes, I know that there are many similar discussions about this topics. But anyway I could't find answer for my case.

I have already installed vSphere 5.5 and View 6.0.1.

Recently we received an two graphical blade-servers with GPU: AMD FirePro S4000x.

I we decided to use them in VDI in that way: on ESXi - vSGA.

Sphere 5.5 support an AMD FirePro and there is an driver for that GPU.

I could install it on server without problems.

Problem occur when I compare graphics capabilities between two virtual desktops: simple desktop which is on simple blade without GPU and graphical desktop which is on graphic blade server.

When I try to play an HD video on them - they are looked very similar.

So I don't know what a difference between them?

Yes, on the graphical virtual desktop in vSphere Web-client interface I have already turn on a hardware rendering and 3D capabilities. And on ESXi due command gpuvm I can see that a GPU was used by virtual machine but I can't realise a difference between two machines.

By the way: in graphical virtual desktop in Device manager in Videoadapters I see "VMware 3D SVGA" label that the same on simple VM without graphics. Why?

Advice on removing unused replica virtual machines

Hey all,

I'm looking to remove some replica VMs which I believe are no longer in use. I've tried using KB 2009844 and the SviConfig, FindUnusedReplica operation but have had no luck. I'm pretty sure these are unused due to their age but I was wonder if anyone could point me down a different path?

Thanks,

Tunneling traffic through the Access Point

$

In the JSON settings of the Access Points I have "tunnelenabled": true;

And on the associated Connection servers the Access Point config guide recommends not enabling tunneling.

The end result is that traffic is passing through the Access Point and not passing through the Connection Server. The customer wants to keep the absolute minimum for open ports between objects so I want to tunnel the traffic from the Access Points through the connection server and then on the internal virtual and physical machines that have the view agent installed. Even when I check the tunneling options on the connection server it still appears as though traffic is bypassing the connection broker and going straight to the agents.

What configuration change do I need to make to have all traffic pass through both the Access points and associated Connection Servers?

Thanks in advance for any assistance or suggestions -

Problem connecting with VMware Horizon HTML Access

$

Hello,

I am using VMware Horizon 6.2.0 and my connection with HTML Access is not working.

The VMware Horizon Client on computers and phones is running with no problem.

- I don't have the Composer installed, I only use the Connection Server.

- I have an agent running on a Windows Server 2012 R2 machine (added to the domain) that is not part of the vCenter server.

- According to the documentation, I have to deploy a Linked-Clone Desktop Pool, but I cannot pass "vCenter Settings" step because my computer is not installed on the vCenter.

- I created a RDS Desktop Pool, but i cannot connect to my desktop or published applications.

The RDS host should be on vCenter to connect to my desktop apps, using HTML Access?

What additional settings I have to make on my RDS host, in order to prepare it for the Linked-Clone Desktop Pool deployment?

I will prefer to let the configuration as is and find a solution to this issue.

I am looking forward for your answer

Thank you!

Persona Management for Windows 10

Is there going to be such a thing or is VMware going to create something new using UE-V?

What should be considered for linked clone deployment using quick prep

I am planning to deploy a Linked clone VM's from a parent VM. Please help me in understanding the steps required to be done on the parent VM in order to use QuickPrep tool.

I am using windows 7 Guest OS to deploy linked clone VM's.

Here are my queries:

-  Do I need to install QuickPrep in parent VM. From where do I need to download at.

-  Once QuickPrep is installed in my parent VM,what should be mentioned(commands) in the scripts so that view composer executed them. Also, having some scripts is manadatory.

-  If I dont have any scripts that view composer can use, what does the view composer do by default.

-  Is view agent mandatory to run the scripts via QuickPrep.

My requirement is to deploy linked clone VM's in the first place, add them to the domain where the parent VM is in,assign dhcp/static IP to the VM's. What should I do to my parent VM to achieve this.

Persona Management and Microsoft enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver - possible issue?

$

Hi all,

Is there a known issue with Persona Management and Windows 2012's new driver delivery system 'Microsoft enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver'?

Here is our environment....

View 6.1.1 - Linked clone floating desktop using Persona Management

Windows 7 Enterprise 64 Bit

VMware Horizon View Agent 6.1.1.2769635

- User maps a print queue on our Windows 2012 Server, since it's a Type 4 driver on the server (Xerox WorkCentre 7970 V4 PCL6) the queue on the Windows 7 end uses a driver named "Microsoft enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver". Within the Win7 client's "Print Management" it appears as version 6.3.9600.17415.

- Printer works fine during their Windows session, they log out (so user data is saved to Persona Management share). They log back in and the print queue is still there but when you right click and go to "printer properties" it throws the following error

"The 'Microsoft enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver' printer driver is not installed on this computer. Some printer properties will not be accessible unless you install the printer driver. Do you want to install the driver now?"

Removing the queue then re-adding it fixes the issue for the Windows session you are in.

We are getting around this by using group policy and a vbs script to remove the queue on logoff then another script to re-add it on logon but that's just a band-aid.

Any thoughts?

I 'think' I've proven that it is Persona Management because I took a physical Windows 7 system and logged in as a user without administrative privileges (just like the virtual desktops) and I couldn't replicate the error across logouts.

[HELP] PCOIP USB Redirection

$

Hello,

I've a small homelab in which I use Horizon View. Sometimes I use it over WAN and often I've the need to copy some files to an usb-stick.

I enabled the usb redirection feature in the agent on the vm that I connect to. Also the rules are enabled in the view administrator panel. The group policies

from the domaincontroller are set so that no usb devices are blocked. I've forwarded the redirection port(32111) to the connection server. The problem is,

thet if I start a session with a view client on a windows machine I'm able to print with an printer connected to the client pc, but a usb stick or other hardware doesnt work.

In the top region it also says:"no usb redirection available on this machine". Funny thing is, that the redirection also doesn't work over LAN. Can someone help me solving that problem?

Kind regards

Herb

Java apps crash

$

Hi all,

We updated our View environment at the end of December from version 6.0.1 to 6.2.1.

Since then, several different Java applications crash after a few seconds without a message or get stuck.

We use Java Runtime Environment in version 8u65 & 8u66.

The following applications are affected:

- SAP Enterprise Service Builder for PI

- ARIS 9.8 (Software AG)

- SQuirreL SQL Client

In our old environment (View 6.0.1) we did not have the problem.

For the new environment we updated the agent from 6.0.1 to 6.2.1 only. We didn't make any other changes to the images.

Has anybody seen this behavior on 6.2.x?

Thanks

James.

Can't connect to a VM through PCoIP

Hi,

Some of the users in the company I work are having problems connecting to their VMs ( about 10-15 from 100). It is not a black screen. It is just saying that the VM can't be contacted.

When it happens: sometimes (2-3 times a week), at the first login in the morning.

Changes made lately: Windows Updates.

How the issue is solved: Restart the VMware View Agent Service remotely.

I have reinstalled the View Agent on their machines. I have updated it. No luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks
